On 7 July 2012, elections to the National Congress were held in Libya, Its main task will be to form a new interim government, develop the country's constitution and adopt the electoral law.
The election campaign was held in difficult conditions. Despite the imposition of the state of emergency in the country on the eve of the election, it happened not without incident: in Benghazi a helicopter carrying ballot papers was shot down, in some cities - mostly in the east of the country – riots and burnings of polling stations happened. For security reasons, up to 100 of 1,500 polling stations did not open.
However, the turnout of about 60% of voters was registered. According to preliminary information, the winner was the Alliance of National Forces (ANF) led by former Prime Minister of the Transitional National Council of Libya Mahmoud Jibril. The second place after the ANF was occupied by the Islamist Justice and Construction Party. Final election results will be announced in the coming days.
Moscow welcomes the election of the National Congress as a confirmation of the commitment of the friendly Libyan people to the establishment of a new democratic social order in their country. We sincerely hope that the overdue fundamental transformation will be based on a broad national dialogue and with respect to all segments of the people for the normalisation of the domestic policy environment and sustainable development of the Libyan state.
