Russian Medals Presented to the Scottish Veterans of the Arctic Convoy on the Victory Day

On 9 May 2015 ‘The 70th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War’ Medals presentation ceremony was held in Glasgow. The medals, along with the personalised limited edition wristwatch, produced in Russia under the auspices of the Russian Military History Society, were presented to 51 Veterans of the Arctic Convoys who reside in Scotland.

Addressing the veterans the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Edinburgh Andrey Pritsepov said: ‘We believe that by remembering the horrors and sacrifices of the war, including the heroic Arctic Convoys, we make sure that it will never happen again. These days it seems to be getting even more essential. We are witnessing more frequent attempts to re-write or simply bend at will the course of the war history. The costs of it could be dire. By forgetting the past we may fail to safeguard our future. That is why we are so keen to pay personal tribute to each and every Veteran of the Arctic Convoys’.

Mr James Osler, the veteran from Glasgow, commented receiving the medal: ‘The Russians have always been so kind to us. I spent two months in Russia, and your people shared everything they had with me, although they didn’t have much for themselves. I would be ready to do something for you again, whatever you ask’.

Mr Leonard Grant from Aberdeen added: ‘We appreciate Russian medal very much, we do indeed. We know it comes from the heart. It has been a wonderful ceremony, full of dignity and truly sincere’.

The ceremony was attended by the Depute Lord Provost of Glasgow Bailie Gerald Leonard, other representatives of the Glasgow City Council, representatives of the British Armed Forces.

The ceremony was followed by the reception in honour of the veterans. The concert dedicated to the 70th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War took place, featuring the war time music and poetry.
