Comment by the Information and Press Department on the parliamentary election in Kosovo

1178-14-06-2017

The results of the June 11 parliamentary election in Kosovo pointed to the continued radicalisation of the political establishment in Pristina. Evidence of this is that the majority of votes were cast for the notorious coalition of the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) commanders led by Ramush Haradinaj, a former KLA commander.

Overall, this is the result of the US and EU policy of connivance with and failure to prod the Kosovar leadership towards adopting a constructive attitude to the dialogue with Belgrade and towards complying with the key agreements reached, primarily those on the establishment of the Community of Serb Majority Municipalities in Kosovo. Another part of the picture is a much-too-soft or non-existent reaction by Kosovo’s Western sponsors to aggressive Greater Albania rhetoric, which has been used increasingly often in the past few months.

As a result, Pristina interpreted this as encouragement for its irreconcilable position at talks with the Serbs and resolved to do its best to break Belgrade’s will. The ultimatums presented by the politicians in Kosovar and their demonstrative rejection of any compromise are cause for serious concern and condemnation by the responsible members of the international community.
