Ambassador Yakovenko on Russia-EU cooperation

Russia continues to view the European Union as a neighbour and our main trade and economic partner. We believe that development of bilateral ties based on the principles of equality and mutual respect meets the long-term interests of our peoples as well as has the potential to strengthen global and regional security and stability.
We understand the desire of the EU to play its own role in resolving various crises and welcome this aspiration on the part of our European partners. As to the majority of international issues, we are equally interested in exchanging views, maintaining a constructive regular dialogue and trying to find a practical way to settle the crises that today’s world is facing, including the conflicts and tensions in the Middle East and North Africa, Afghanistan, on the Korean Peninsula and in other regions.
Russia and the EU are working on building up our cooperation in fighting terrorism, drug trafficking and illegal migration, as well as prevention of proliferation of WMD and related technologies. We are satisfied with the resumption of our dialogue on counterterrorism after a long pause. It is equally important to give fresh impetus to our sectoral dialogue formats, including energy, transport, environmental protection and others, where a number of problems that require joint decisions have accumulated. Advantages of our interaction are self-evident, especially in today’s highly competitive global environment.
