PRESS RELEASES AND NEWS

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during talks with Foreign Minister of Sierra Leone Samura Kamara, Moscow, July 21, 2017

Mr Kamara, friends,

Welcome to Moscow. We are greeting you both as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Sierra Leone and as Chairman of the African Union Committee of Ten (C-10) which is engaged in defending Africa’s interests in the reformation process of the UN Security Council.

We know about the role your country plays in promoting African interests on the international stage and in facilitating a settlement of a series of crises on the African continent. We consistently support the need to defend Africa’s interests in the ongoing discussions about reforming the UN Security Council. I’d like to reassure you that Russia will not support proposals on reforming the Security Council if they ignore the opinions of African states.

Today we will exchange detailed opinions about the talks in New York. Of course, we are interested in your estimation of prospects for settling conflicts on the African continent, including the Gulf of Guinea, the Sahara-Sahel region, as well as prospects for further consolidation of efforts with African countries in counteracting terrorism, piracy and other threats.

We are striving to strengthen bilateral cooperation with the Republic of Sierra Leone. Our relations have always rested on mutual understanding, respect for each other’s interests and interaction within international organisations on the basis of the principles of the UN Charter.

We hope that today’s talks will also help to bring trade, economic and investment cooperation to a new level so that it conforms to the supreme level of our political dialogue.

Again, welcome, we are happy to see you here.
