Russian Embassy Spokesperson comment

Question: A former head of GCHQ, Mr Hannigan warned that Russia had long been waging a cyberwar on western nations - likely to include Britain. “It caught them by surprise. They were naive,” he said.

What is your comment on that?

Answer: These accusations, although lacking any evidence, are the result of yet another failure of “Cold war hawks” among Western elites. Unable to cope with or even comprehend new global challenges threatening the international community, they prefer to live happily in denial - in a long-gone ghost reality where life was easy, Russia was the one and only threat and military budgets were generous.

They tried to pull us into their imagined “new Cold war” paradigm as well, but failed. First of all, because Russia refused to play along those lines – we do not think we are in a war, and act accordingly. Secondly, how can you describe “ever-present Russian threat”, when our armed forces are spread thinly across the country, and our military budget ten times smaller than those of the Western countries?

So, with hard facts failing them, they obviously decided to try it online. Due to the  very nature of the Internet, it is mostly anonym and shady, and anyone can create an arch-enemy – especially if no evidence is needed anymore. With all those outdated games the real challenges and threats remain unaddressed, like terrorism. Even if someone ignores the reality, it is still there.

And yes, when a high-ranked secret service officer complains about “naivety” – it is rather remarkable.
