Embassy Press release on numerous publications in British media on blaming Russia for the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 crash

Due to numerous publications in the British media focused on blaming Russia for the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 crash the Embassy would like to state the following.

Once again we note the biased approach of British journalists in covering the topic connected with the investigation of the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 crash. Russia finds itself the target of completely groundless accusations, blaming Russian servicemen for the tragedy, intended to discredit our country in the eyes of the international community.

As was the case at its previous news conferences, statements made at this JIT conference did not produce a single shred of concrete evidence to back up these groundless accusations. Regrettably, the JIT continues to put forward not entirely reasonable arguments, based on dubious information sources.

International investigators excluded Russia from full participation in the JIT, reducing Russian efforts to a secondary role. Meanwhile, they made Ukraine a full participant in the JIT, giving it an opportunity to falsify evidence and completely evade responsibility for failing to close its air space.

We are appalled by the spreading of absolutely false accusations by the JIT representatives against Russia of withholding full cooperation. From the very first day of the tragedy, Russia has actively cooperated with the Netherlands. Russia has presented all information it had on the MH17 crash obtained by the respective agencies in the course of their own investigation. As part of this the Russian side has carried out unprecedented work: from declassifying information on Russian military equipment and conducting a meticulous experiment in collaboration with Almaz-Antei, to providing primary radar data and documents showing that the missile that downed the Malaysian Boeing belonged to Ukraine, as well as precision expert analysis proving that the video clips supporting the JIT’s conclusions were fabricated. Yet this data continues to be willfully ignored.

We grieve together with the relatives of those who have lost their lives in this malicious tragedy and will continue to assist the investigation so that the truth about the MH17 crash is established and the real culprits are duly punished.

14.02.2020 - Embassy Press Officer’s reply to media question on allegations against Russia with regard to persecution of Christians

Question: How would you comment on the statement mentioning Russia’s “violations” made by the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the FCO H.Wheeler on February 6 at the debate in the House of Commons on persecution of Christians? Answer: This statement is ill-advised and could not be further from the truth. Christians make up the majority of Russian believers. Hundreds of new churches are being built. The Russian Orthodox Church is actively engaging in public discussions on socially significant issues. Most favourable conditions have been created for exercising the freedom of belief for other Christian denominations as well as non-Christians.
