Embassy Press Officer’s reply to a media question concerning the course of investigation into Salisbury and Amesbury incidents

Question: How would you comment on the official statement of the Met Police claiming that one more police officer was affected by a nerve agent in March 2018 in Salisbury?

Answer: Contents of the Met Police official press release of 15 August only raises further questions. It is unclear why such vital information has not been disclosed for almost a year and a half since the incident itself. The allegedly affected officer is not named, although up till now the British authorities did not shy away from publishing personal details of those involved in the response to the incident, including Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey. Furthermore, the new information cites a “different method” of assessing the clinical effects of nerve agent poisoning, which for some reason hadn’t been used before.

For these reasons, and taking into account multiple inconsistencies in earlier official British statements (including obvious questions regarding origins of the bottle allegedly containing the nerve agent which was supposedly found in Charlie Rowley’s flat in Amesbury) the information published by the Met Police cannot be trusted. It is yet another attempt to provide the government’s political narrative over the events in Salisbury with some semblance of evidence.

And yet, with almost a year and a half having passed since the Salisbury incident, the British authorities continue to refuse to cooperate with the Russian side and still keep in secret any information regarding health condition and whereabouts of the two Russian citizens – Sergei and Yulia Skripal, thus violating their obligations under consular conventions and legal assistance agreements. Such behavior can only be explained by the fact that publication of all details of this incident does not meet the interests of the UK Government.

Question: How would you comment on the statement mentioning Russia’s “violations” made by the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the FCO H.Wheeler on February 6 at the debate in the House of Commons on persecution of Christians? Answer: This statement is ill-advised and could not be further from the truth. Christians make up the majority of Russian believers. Hundreds of new churches are being built. The Russian Orthodox Church is actively engaging in public discussions on socially significant issues. Most favourable conditions have been created for exercising the freedom of belief for other Christian denominations as well as non-Christians.
