Statements for the mass media by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, on the situation around the arrested popular governor of Donetsk, Pavel Gubarev

We are very concerned about the fate of political detainees in Ukraine, people, who were arrested and put into prisons only because they participated in political actions. One of them is Pavel Gubarev, who was elected the so-called “popular governor” in Donetsk and about the fate of whom we talked to our western partners, including the Secretary of State, John Kerry, many times. Last time, I raised this question in Geneva on the 17 April, when we agreed the well-known Geneva statement. Despite all the assurances that the Americans will use all their authority to resolve this problem immediately, we are not receiving any good news. On the contrary, today we received, I will say directly, worrying news that Pavel Gubarev’s health is deteriorating. We are sending an official message to the OSCE so that the mission of this organisation in Ukraine gets access to Pavel Gubarev immediately. We are sending a similar document to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva, whose mandate includes visits to detainees in places of their detention. We will request immediate access to Pavel Gubarev to obtain assurance that his health is OK. Of course, we will continue to take efforts aimed at ensuring his immediate liberation as a political detainee.
