Statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov after his talks with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Lakhdar Brahimi on the sidelines of the OSCE’s ministerial meeting in Dublin

We agreed that all our joint actions will be based on the Geneva Communique. Discussing the current state of affairs, we decided that participants of the Action Group for Syria will be able to implement the tasks that were outlined on June 30. Russia and the United States realize that they bear special responsibility for international stability, something that was stressed by Lakhdar Brahimi. He believes that Moscow and Washington could try to contribute significantly to implementing the Geneva agreements. He proceeds from the assumption that Russia and the United States could support his drive to initiate a dialogue between the Assad regime and the opposition. Although we know full well that we have just one chance to succeed, our experts will meet Brahimi in the coming days so as to stage something of a “brainstorm.” Now, we have all we need in order to exchange views on the resolution of the Syrian crisis. First and foremost, we should discuss Lakhdar Brahimi’s push for mediating talks between the Syrian government and armed opposition. I remain cautiously optimistic on the matter, and in any case, I could not say “no” to the UN-Arab League envoy’s proposal, a stance that is echoed by Americans.
