Arkhangelsk Commemorates 75th Anniversary of First Arctic Convoy

The city of Arkhangelsk is hosting a series of events to mark the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the first Allied Lend-Lease convoy to provide military supplies and food to the USSR in order to bolster the Soviet war effort against the Nazi Germany.

500 delegates from Russia, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, France, New Zealand, Iceland, Poland and the Netherlands, including ambassadors and 40 Allied WWII veterans, arrived in Arkhangelsk to participate in the commemoration ceremony marking the date that the first Arctic Convoy, 'Dervish', reached the city of Arkhangelsk.
The event was also attended by Princess Royal Anne of the British Royal Family and her husband Sir Timothy Laurence, who honored the British sailors killed during WWII who were buried in Arkhangelsk. They attended a military orchestra concert, in which the orchestra of the Royal Marines Corps took part and other official events.

At the gala concert "The convoy that made it through the time," the Governor of Arkhangelsk Igor Orlov presented Her Royal Highness with the memorial sign "Dervish-75". The memorial sign was also presented to veterans of Arctic convoys, heads of diplomatic missions and special guests of the evening.

Princess Anne presented the North Sea Museum with the UK state award - "Arctic Star" medal, is awarded for service in the convoys in 1941-1945. About 3000 British Arctic Convoys veterans have been presented Ushakov medal, a Russian naval honour, over the last 2 years.

Victory Day celebrated in Britain

On 9 May 2018 the Victory in the Great Patriotic War was celebrated in London with a traditional wreath laying ceremony at the Soviet War Memorial near the Imperial War Museum. The participants included Russian and British veterans, representatives of the UK authorities, Embassies of Russia and other CIS countries, NGOs, Russian community. The "Immortal Regiment" of descendants of WW2 soldiers marched in London from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square along the Whitehall. Around 3500 people took part in this remembrance rally. Other events took place in Manchester, Derby, Leeds, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and other cities.

“Read Russia” stand opens at the London Book Fair

On 10 April Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko jointly with the Deputy Head of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications Mr Vladimir Grigoriev visited the official opening of the Russian national stand “Read Russia” at the 47th International London Book Fair (LBF-2018) at Olympia exhibition centre, London. “Read Russia” project is a traditional participant of London Book Fair. 2018 it presents over 500 book titles mostly by modern authors.

Reception to mark the Russia’s participation in the London Book Fair 2018

On 9 April 2018 the Russian Embassy hosted a reception to mark the London Book Fair 2018. “Read Russia” stand at LBF has already become a tradition. This year it proudly presents more than 500 book titles, mostly by modern authors. At the reception 2018 READ RUSSIA prizes were presented for best translations of Russian works of fiction, classical and contemporary, into English.

Recital by Anastasia Kuznetsova at the Russian Embassy

On 31 March 2018 the Ambassador’s residence hosted a recital by Anastasia Kuznetsova, daughter of the Nobel Prize laureate poet Joseph Brodsky. On her birthday Ms Kuznetsova, introduced by Keele University Professor Valentina Polukhina, performed her poems and songs. Actress of the Taganka Theatre Anna Agapova recited poems by Brodsky.
