PHOTO REPORTS

On 6 October 2021, Ambassador Andrei Kelin visited Coventry to take part in commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of Volgograd and Coventry twinning

During his visit, Ambassador met with Lord Mayor of Coventry CIIr John McNicholas, Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, other City Council officials, as well as members of the Twin City Association.

On the sidelines of the event, Ambassador Kelin unveiled the “Stalingrad in British History” exhibition at the Coventry City Council dedicated to the history of friendly relations between the two cities. The exposition consists of previously unpublished documents from Russian and British archives and will be open for attendance free of charge.

Russia and Great Britain were key allies in World War II. Britain was the only country to have launched a large-scale fund-raising movement to support the city of Stalingrad which suffered heavy damage from Nazi bombings. People from over 300 towns and cities across the UK have participated in this campaign, with Coventry leading this movement.

“Stalingrad in British History” exhibition is an excellent opportunity to pay our respects to those who fought and who gave their lives for this victory and our freedom. Preservation of this memory is especially important to counter attempts to falsify history.

As long as we remember our history, the horrors of war and its consequences, there is still hope that we can avoid such tragedies in the future.
