I am pleased to welcome UK Foreign Secretary William Hague to Moscow. This first visit of my counterpart in this capacity is very intense. We have just returned from a meeting with the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev. The Russian leadership once again confirmed our principled policy aimed at developing all-round constructive cooperation with Britain and at furthering the accords that had been reached between President Medvedev and Prime Minister David Cameron at their recent meeting in June. Mr. Hague delivered a message from the British Prime Minister to the President of Russia, where this policy has again found support. The President also reiterated his commitment to this direction.

The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation today discussed enhanced cooperation to support the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in its efforts to ensure security and stability in Afghanistan. The spread of narcotics, terrorism and violent extremism from Afghanistan continues to pose trans-boundary threats to the United Kingdom, the Russian Federation and our international partners. The Foreign Secretary and Minister of Foreign Affairs agreed to continue to cooperate closely to tackle these shared threats.

At the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, British Foreign Secretary William Hague will pay a working visit to Moscow on October 12-13. During the upcoming talks the full range of Russian-British relations is expected to be discussed – including prospects for further development of political dialogue and key aspects of economic, trade and investment cooperation. An important area of cooperation between our countries is cultural links. We expect that at the talks the parties will exchange views on the buildup of exchanges in this field. There is also to be talk on the situation in the visa area. The ministers will also examine current topics of the international and regional agenda.

On September 23, a short conversation between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs William Hague of the UK took place in New York on the sidelines of the 65th UN General Assembly session. During their conversation the parties exchanged views on certain topical issues in Russian-British relations.

On 21 July 2010 the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Court of St.James’s Yury Fedotov met Mr David Lidington MP, Minister of State for Europe of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. They discussed issues of European policy as well as Russian – British bilateral relations.


21.07.2010 - Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Meets with UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs William Hague

On July 20, a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs William Hague took place in Kabul on the sidelines of the International Conference on Afghanistan. During the conversation the sides exchanged views on a number of key themes on the international agenda, as well as certain topical issues in Russian-British relations and a schedule of upcoming contacts as a follow-up to the conversation between President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev and British Prime Minister David Cameron in Canada this past June.

On 7 July 2010 the H.E. Mr. Yury Fedotov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United Kingdom held a meeting at his London residence with the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man Mr Tony Brown and the accompanying officials. The sides discussed the prospects of developing trade and economic relations between Russia and the Isle of Man.


05.07.2010 - A.V.Konovalov, Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation, visits London

On 5 July the Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation A.V.Konovalov met the Rt Hon. K.Clarke, MP, Secretary of State for Justice to discuss the issues related to bilateral legal cooperation between the two countries. Later that day Mr. A.V.Konovalov met the Attorney-General D.Grieve.

This was announced by Dmitry Medvedev following his meeting with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Cameron.


15.05.2010 - Dmitry Medvedev had a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Mr Medvedev congratulated Mr Cameron on his election to the post of British Prime Minister and wished him success in this high office. Mr Cameron thanked Dmitry Medvedev for his kind words and for the letter of congratulations sent earlier. The two sides expressed readiness to cooperate actively in strengthening Russian-British ties, jointly searching for solutions to outstanding problems between the two countries, and to deepen cooperation on international issues, including in preparations for upcoming important international forums where the two leaders plan to hold a bilateral meeting.
