Ambassador Andrei Kelin's address at the sister-city Sochi-Cheltenham forum, 10 September 2021

Ladies and gentlemen,

Dear guests,

In June of this year, Sochi and Cheltenham celebrated the 62nd anniversary of their sister-city relations. This whole period is marked by close amity between residents of these two cities, regular reciprocal visits, joint cultural events and youth exchange programs. It is encouraging to see the strengthening and expansion of relations between Sochi and Cheltenham through collaborative culture and education projects. Public initiative of thoughtful and involved individuals, both in Russia and the UK, promotes dialogue between our nations.

One of landmark projects in this field, is the Russian-British International Film Festival (SIFFA). Since 2015, the most recent works of world-famous and aspiring British directors are presented in Sochi annually. This is an opportunity for the Russian audience to see the novelties of the British cinema.

I must admit, I was happy and delighted to hear that this year the opening of another season of the Russian-British Festival will take place in Cheltenham. Two films by the talented Russian director - Vladimir Khotinenko - were selected for screening for the British audience. Both are dedicated to the life of the great Russian writer, philosopher and publicist - Fyodor Dostoyevsky. By the way, his works opened a new page in world literature - a period of realism - and had a strong influence on the works of British writers as well, including Robert Louis Stevenson, George Robert Gissing, Gilbert Keith Chesterton and several others.

I am very hopeful that screenings of the Russian-British Festival (SIFFA) in Cheltenham will become a great tradition. I would like to note that over the six years of its existence, the Festival proved to be an important platform for professional communication between different level film directors of various nationalities. They present carefully selected and diverse films to the viewer. Moreover, this is one of the key cultural events, bringing together Russia and the UK.

Dear friends, the potential for cooperation between Sochi and Cheltenham is truly infinite. I wish you to keep this up and expand the list of successful collaborative projects. It encompasses culture, education, tourism, sport, the environment and, or course, business. On its part, the Russian Embassy in the UK is always ready to provide the necessary support for your initiatives.

I wish you all good health, best of luck and success!

Thank you for your attention!

Ambassador Andrei Kelin's address on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the first Arctic convoy "Dervish" arrival in the port of Arkhangelsk

Dear participants, Today we are commemorating a memorable anniversary of our shared history: 80 years ago, on this day the first Arctic convoy «Dervish» arrived in the port of Arkhangelsk with strategically important cargoes for the needs of the Red Army. The sailors of the Allied countries demonstrated true heroism, sending the aid by the shortest route in harsh Arctic conditions under enemy fire. Thus, in the first months of the war, which were the most difficult for the USSR, the Allies made a significant contribution to the fight of the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany. The courage, valor and strength of character of our peoples are a vivid example of «brotherhood in arms» and mutual assistance which united our countries against the German fascists. These glorious pages are forever inscribed in the history of our common victories.
